Let's talk money ? o o o So many comments coming in asking how to afford travel like this. Step #2 of making this goal of mine a reality was to figure out how I'd be able to pay for it. Prior to this Expedition, I managed to stretch out the $2,000 I saved one summer from Lifeguarding to travel to roughly 25 countries over the span of about 2 years. Some great sites that helped me to be able to make that $2k last were: -helpx.net and workaway.info (work in exchange for accommodation and food) -couchsurfing.org (free accomodation) -statravel.com (cheap flights for those under 26/student/teacher) And of course, living off of bread, sleeping in train stations, and hitchhiking. o o o But for Expedition 196, I had to plan a year and a half in advance. I asked myself A) What is a sponsor? B) Why would they sponsor me, and C) How do I obtain them? It wasn't easy, sponsors are not going to invest in you if you do not have something to offer them in return. o o o Before you can even consider obtaining sponsors or investors to travel, you need to figure out what your quest is going to be, what do you have to offer the world? Traveling is great, but what's your purpose? What good will you be doing for the world through your travels and how will you help people? For me, I wanted to focus on peace through tourism and sustainability. I thought the best way to make an impact would be through an educational documentary and speaking around the world to university students. Like I said, traveling is great, but if you can utilize your travels towards making a positive impact, supporting a cause or doing something unique with it to help the world, you're one step closer towards finding funding to make your dream come true. ? o o o While there's so much more to this, feel free to check out my sponsors page on my website: www.expedition196.com/sponsors, my sponsorship deck is up there for all to see. I'll continue sharing tidbits as to how I made my dream a reality throughout future posts. In the meantime, loving hearing from you all! ???? o o o #expedition196

Lots of questions coming in with the most common being, "How can I do what you do? I want to travel the world but don't know where to start." Thinking back to when the idea came about, I had to face several main fears of mine, the most prominent being death...The thought of maybe dying on this trip (sorry it's depressing, but it's true), since the risks, I was told, of traveling as a female alone would be "very high". Let me share with you what the first thing was that I had to overcome in order to get to where I am today. ? o o o If you choose to accept that the consequences of you pursuing your dream might involve death, if you're willing to not only face your fear, but embrace your fear, learn from your fears and accept the risk of death to pursue a dream, you've just taken the first step towards achieving something you never deemed possible for yourself to achieve. If you choose to face the inevitable consequences of death, your mind has already made room for the freedom and choice to devote every ounce of yourself towards making that dream happen. As soon as you accept the consequences of fear, failure, and death, there will be no other option, no other choice than to motivate yourself, devote yourself, every ounce of yourself, to persevere towards succeeding in your personal life's quest that you set out for yourself. So, throw yourself into the fire of your own fears; always know that death is near and accept that, and devote your life and every ounce of yourself to that specific quest. You can do anything, you can do what I do, if that's what you're into, but most importantly, you have the power to pursue your own goals and succeed in doing so by becoming accepting of death, fear and failure. o o o #expedition196

Traveling through Africa has been the most challenging for me. It's not only the most expensive leg (flights, hotels), the one that requires the most visas in advance that are also expensive, but physically challenging as well, with needing to be careful with my water and food intake, malaria prevention, etc. as well. In my lifetime, I've experienced an immense amount of poverty in countries around the world and have lived/worked in impoverished nations, but I've never seen anything like what I have seen so far throughout Western Africa in particular. I've had such an urge to want to jump outside of my body and leave everything I have to just walk through the villages and live with these people, sit on the side of the road with them. The other day driving around in Bamako it took everything in me to not just jump out of the car and start walking into the dead of night. I can't explain this feeling but I don't expect anyone to relate, as if this Expedition were unrelatable enough, but I've never really had the feeling of wanting to become invisible to the point of where I can safely live like a local in some of these countries, without being viewed as a tourist or "white girl" or that I had any money at all. When I'm in these places, I feel for these people and the way they live. I can't believe that if I were back in the states this weekend I'd probably be concerned about feeding my dogs more than myself, and baking a pumpkin pie or going to Starbucks for a pumpkin spice latte. But this weekend... I'm here. And it pained me to eat even just plate of steamed vegetables knowing that these people outside are suffering in this 95 degree dry heat, landlocked with little resources for water and food, where the life expectancy is just 54 years old. Maybe when you drink a pumpkin spice latte today, you can think of this. These people would kill for one (I would too, figuratively speaking ?). It's not to feel guilty for what we have, but I think we have a responsibility as earthlings to be educated and subconsciously aware. At the end of the day, we don't have a choice what society we're born into, but we can at least be aware.

After a 1 hour and 15 minute fast paced uphill trek, I arrived at Paro Taktsang. The pilgrimage was like something out of Avatar, a dream to trek, through low hanging clouds with a harrowing drop at any given moment on either side. Prayer flags swayed through the pines, prayer wheels spinning in the breeze, and tsa-tsas (ashes of the dead) wedged between crevices of stone. Passing over a bridge and waterfall and up the last flight of stairs, I entered one of the chambers where I was completely alone. Tip-toeing past the glowing butter candles and sacred relics, I kneeled on a rug, cracked open an aged window and rested my head on the windowsill to reflect and admire the massive 2,000ft plunge into the vast Himalayan valley below, as clouds swiftly passed. Without my phone or camera equipment, I was able to consciously enjoy this moment in peace. ? o o o #expedition196 #everycountryintheworld

Education isn't something you can finish. - Issac Asimov o o o I left college with only a semester left to go in order to graduate. To this day, people tell me to "finish". When I ask them why, they tell me one of the following, "to get that piece of paper", "to say you did", "to get a job (to work for someone else)", "just because". But never is it a good enough reason for me to finish. The things I've learned in my travels to over 85 countries across 6 continents in my life, have opened up my eyes to an educational experience that college never exposed me to. I could never imagine quitting this Expedition to pay 16k for a piece a paper. Because at the end of the day, that piece of paper would buy me nothing but a frame on my wall. What the end of this Expedition will bring me is far more than what a degree would. College might not be for everyone, especially if you have something greater in mind. Just know to follow your excitement, forge your own path, and with enough determination and persistence, success will come. ? o o o #Expedition196 #PeaceThroughTourism #EveryCountryInTheWorld #Panama

Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end, requires some of the same courage which a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men to win them. - Ralph Waldo Emerson o o o #Howth #Ireland, I never want to leave you. So there's this Irish Chef, his name is @donalskehan and he has his own cooking show and vlog on YouTube which I watch, and on one of his vlogs, he was showing his hometown of Howth. And I thought, I have to go there when I visit Dublin - it's so close to the city yet so immersed in nature. The air was so fresh and I literally did not want to leave. Being a traveler who likes to venture into countries with no preconceptions and an open mind, I'll admit that I was a little nervous about going to a place that's experienced as much turmoil as France and Lebanon in the past several months, just based off of the news. I knew nothing about Tunisia, other than it being a country in North Africa, and I wanted to keep it that way, hoping that I'd learn more about its beauty and history from the local people and a pair of open eyes. I chose to go two days without internet in order to fully immerse myself in the way of life here. I boarded a 14 hour ferry with Italians and Tunisians who either spoke Italian, French or Arabic. Upon disembarking, I was alone in the streets of #Tunis, not knowing the language and on a whole new continent. But I had confidence in myself and trust in the goodness of the people. o o o Tunisia has made it to my top 5 favorite countries I've ever been to. It blew me away with its beauty, allure, kind-hearted and helpful people and safety factor being a woman traveling alone. I felt 100% comfortable here. Tourism is really hurting here after the recent ISIS attacks, but despite this, people need not be afraid of traveling to these countries based off what they hear on the news. Fear is something I'm leaving at the door from here on out. o o o #Expedition196 #PeaceThroughTourism #EveryCountryInTheWorld #Tunisia

#Paris was blessed with a delicate, crested moon amidst a tenderly pained sky tonight as the people below observed its magnificence in silence. The streets were quiet and the people, humble. Amid the tragedy and heartbreak, everyones humanity, kindness, and unity towards one another was clear. We're all connected, we all stand together; despite religion, political stance, nationality, age or gender. Not a word has to be said when looking into the eyes of those who have endured such heartache. Their compassion shines though and there is a mutual feeling of respect. #TransformationTuesday The search is what everyone would take if he were not stuck in the everydayness of his own life. To be aware of the possibility of the search is to be onto something. Not to be onto something is to be in despair. - Walker Percy o o o This photo is of me a year and a half ago. I had just quit one of my two jobs and was so excited. I went from working 82 hours a week, 7 days a week to 40 hours a week, 4 days a week. Up until that point I had recently turned 25 and I felt as though I was drifting through life. Working just to find those two hours in my week when I could sit alone at the edge of the cliff side and watch the sun sink into the pacific. During these times I would think deeply about my life's purpose. I couldn't figure out why I was put on this earth, if it was to work 85 hours a week in two jobs where neither were furthering my "career" in any way. But what was my "career"? I had no idea what I was it was or what I wanted out of life. --- These reflections at sundown provided me with a clear mind to figure out my life's game plan, and yet week after week went by and I had no idea. --- One day I was extremely stressed after having a really difficult last day of the week at work. I couldn't catch the sunset that Sunday because I got out at 9pm. I was so angry with myself because I wasn't able to experience my weekly sunset wind down. That was the last straw for me. I sat at the cliff the following week and told myself I was going to travel the world, and do so for a purpose. --- It was this photo that I took of myself after quitting one of my jobs. I bought a wall map and started connecting the dots to create what would later be #Expedition196. --- Looking back from then to now and everything that has happened in between is astounding. Nothing in life is ever easy. Flash forward to now, I'm experiencing an overwhelming amount of stress, but I wanted this. I am working towards my own goal that I set out for myself. And I wouldn't ever give it up or change it for the world. o o o

To merge with the locals and create a mutual respect and understanding of "friendship". To be the positive example of your own country and show kindness and compassion. To veer off the beaten path and away from the familiar; to understand a new culture, and stay in establishments that are committed to respecting the local heritage and environment.
