Charles Robert Jenkins, a former US Army Sergeant who famously defected to North Korea in 1965 but was freed with his family by the Japanese government in 2002, has been reported to have died today on Sabo Island in Japan. Say what you will about Jenkins, but he did gain a bit of common sense later on as he willingly left North Korea and even surrendered himself to the United States Army to face punishment for his 40 years of AWOL. He and four other soldiers defected in 1965 but he was the sole one who returned, and their intent was to flee to North Korea and get to the Russian embassy. That didn't happen as once they got to the embassy they were denied asylum and were placed back into North Korean custody. The men were often beaten and were sometimes forced to beat each other, and were even occasionally forced to undergo medical procedures without anaesthetic, such as having a US Army tattoo cut off with a scalpel. They were forced to learn Korean and also the teachings of then-North Korean dictator Kim Il-Sung, and they also performed in North Korean propaganda films where they usually portrayed Western villians. After Jenkins's Japanese wife (she was kidnapped in the 1980s by North Korea and they were forced to be married) was allowed to return to Japan with their daughters in 2002 he stayed behind due to fear that Pyongyang was testing his loyalty and he did not actually leave until 2004. He surrendered to the US Army on September 11th 2004 at Camp Zama, and he pleaded guilty to desertion and aiding the enemy. He was sentenced to 30 days confinment, received a dishonorable discharge, forfeited all pay and benefits of the US Army, and was reduced in rank to E-1 Private. He lived on Sado Island with his wife and daughters and they visited the United States once or twice over the years, and he also stated he would always regret his defection to North Korea.
